The Atlee Room of the House of Lords buzzed on the evening of February 1st with the learned conversation of some of Britain's finest legal minds, gathered expressly to toast the re-launch of the University's prestigious Denning Law Journal, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with the appearance of the current issue.

The Rt Hon Lord Slynn of Hadley, chairman of the journal's Editorial Advisory Board, congratulated the editorial team (all lecturers in law at the University) on the scholarly content of the 2006 volume. He promised a 'light touch' as chairman, but the journal's editor, Professor Susan Edwards, who replied to his opening words, showed due appreciation of the real weight his superbly-qualified international advisory board will have.

Professor Edwards promised that the editorial policy of the journal would seek to keep alive the spirit of controversy which inspired its establishment and its name, and renewed its commitment to clarity of thought and clear communication. Respect for the ancient traditions of common law as an instrument of human freedom, as represented by Lord Denning, would be combined with an understanding of the need to broaden the journal's remit through articles on domestic as well as international, comparative, and Human Rights law.

As the company drank to Lord Denning's memory and the future of the journal, there was a realisation that the real champagne for the brain lay in the latter's pages, not in the glass. There was no call for money to be raised, rather a call for papers, enthusiastically received.
